copy-editing

what it does

When the user wants to edit, review, or improve existing marketing copy, or refresh outdated content. Also use when the user mentions 'edit this copy,' 'review my copy,' 'copy feedback,' 'proofread,' 'polish this,' 'make this better,' 'copy sweep,' 'tighten this up,' 'this reads awkwardly,' 'clean up this text,' 'too wordy,' 'sharpen the messaging,' 'refresh this content,' 'update this page,' 'this content is outdated,' or 'content audit,' 'this sounds like AI,' 'AI slop,' 'de-slop this,' or 'make it sound human.' Use this when the user already has copy and wants it improved or refreshed rather than rewritten from scratch. Every edit removes AI tells such as 'it's not X, it's Y' reveals, 'no X, no Y, no Z' lists, and sentences that trail into extra comma clauses. A request to fix one line gets a point edit that changes only that line. For writing new copy, see copywriting.

“Review this testimonial section and improve it: 'CloudSync is great! It really helped our company. The team was very responsive and the product works well. We would recommend it to anyone looking for a solution. - John S., CEO'”

# Testimonial edit **Diagnosis:** This is someone else's quote, so I can't add detail to it. Anything I invent (a time saved, a result, a "before" story) would be a fabricated endorsement. The quote is generic: every sentence could be about any software, and "great," "really helped," and "works well" give a prospect nothing to believe. The fix is better raw material from John, not better wording from us. ## What's weak | Line | Problem | |---|---| | "CloudSync is great!" | Empty praise. Doesn't say what's great. | | "It really helped our company." | Helped how? Which problem, what changed? | | "The team was very responsive" | The one semi-concrete claim, but there's no example or timeframe. | | "The product works well." | Says nothing about the work it does. | | "We would recommend it to anyone looking for a solution." | Filler. "A solution" to what? | | "John S., CEO" | No company, no full name, no photo. Readers discount anonymous-looking proof. | ## Option 1: Safe trim (needs John's approval) If you can't get more from him, cut to the strongest line and don't change his words: > "The team was very responsive and the product works well."
Show the rest (26 more lines)
> **John S., CEO, [NEED: company name]** This is shorter and more credible than the original, but still modest proof. ## Option 2: Get a better quote (recommended) Send John 3 questions and ask for a sentence or two on each: 1. What were you doing before CloudSync, and what wasn't working? 2. What's different now? Any number you can share (hours saved, errors cut, cost, team size)? 3. Can you give an example of when our team responded quickly? What was the issue and how long did it take? Then build the quote from his answers. Here's the structure with placeholders: > "[NEED: before state, e.g. what broke or took too long]. Since switching to CloudSync, [NEED: specific result with a number or timeframe]. When [NEED: specific issue], the team [NEED: what they did] within [NEED: time]." > **[NEED: full name], CEO, [NEED: company]** + photo and logo Get his sign-off on the final wording before publishing. ## Presentation fixes - **Add a pull-quote headline** from his best specific line, set larger above the full quote. - **Complete the attribution:** full name, company, logo, and a headshot if he'll allow it. Link to a case study if one exists. - **Place it near a CTA** so it answers hesitation at the moment of decision. If you send me John's answers to those three questions, I'll edit them into a finished testimonial.

# Testimonial Review ## What's Not Working 1. **Vague praise.** "Great," "really helped," and "works well" could describe any product. Nothing tells the reader *what* CloudSync did. 2. **No specific outcome.** There are no numbers, timeframes, or before/after contrasts, which are what make testimonials persuasive. 3. **Generic recommendation.** "Anyone looking for a solution" is filler. A strong testimonial names the type of buyer who would benefit. 4. **Weak attribution.** "John S., CEO" of what? Without a company name, industry, or photo, the quote looks unverifiable or even fabricated. 5. **Unsupported claim of responsiveness.** "Very responsive" is more believable with an example, such as "answered within an hour." ## Improved Version (Template) > "Before CloudSync, our team spent **[X hours/week]** manually reconciling files across **[offices/tools]**. Within **[timeframe]**, we **[specific result: cut sync errors by X%, saved X hours, eliminated version conflicts]**. When we hit a snag during setup, their support team **[specific action, e.g., had it resolved the same day]**. If your team is **[specific pain point]**, CloudSync is worth it." > > **John S.**, CEO, **[Company Name]** > *[Industry · Company size]* + headshot or company logo ## Example With Placeholder Details > "We used to lose hours every week to version conflicts and missing files. Since switching to CloudSync, our 40-person team stays in sync across three offices, and those issues have essentially disappeared. When we had a question during onboarding, support replied within the hour. I'd recommend it to any growing company with distributed teams."

> > **John S.**, CEO, [Company Name], [Industry] *The details above are illustrative. Replace them with what John actually experienced, and get his approval on the final wording.* ## Quick Wins - **Lead with the result.** Consider a bold headline pulled from the quote, like **"Cut file-sync errors by 90%."** - **Add a photo or logo.** This typically boosts credibility significantly. - **Link to a case study** if one exists. - **Keep it to 2-4 sentences.** Longer quotes lose readers. - **Use real language.** Ask John a few questions (*What problem were you facing? What changed? What surprised you?*) and edit his actual answers instead of writing for him. ## Suggested Questions for John 1. What were you using before, and what wasn't working? 2. What measurable difference has CloudSync made? 3. What was onboarding or support like? 4. Who would you tell to try it? If you share more details about what CloudSync does and what John said, I can tailor a final version.

creator-6

“Write fresh homepage copy for our new product. We're launching a CRM for real estate agents.”

creator-7

“My client says this copy reads like AI slop. Fix it: 1. Most agencies have a folder of campaign ideas nobody will ever launch. Not because they're bad ideas. Because each one needs a developer. 2. No onboarding call, no spreadsheet templates, no chasing approvals by email. No contract. 3. Reports, alerts, and client dashboards all update straight from the ad accounts you already connected, no exports, no manual refresh, no second copy of the data to maintain.”

creator-8

“Run your AI-slop check on this landing page section before it ships. Only change what actually needs changing. Headline: Close the books in two days instead of ten. Subhead: Ledgerly matches bank transactions to invoices every night, keeping your existing account codes. CTA: Start a 14-day trial. No card required. Features: Bank matching, approval routing, and audit trails. FAQ: Does it work with NetSuite? Yes. It syncs both ways every hour.”

creator-9

“Just fix the headline, it feels flat. Leave the rest alone. Headline: Better invoicing for small agencies Subhead: Ledgerly sends invoices the day a project milestone closes and chases late payers for you, so most clients pay within 9 days. Body: We built Ledgerly after our own agency waited 61 days on a $40k invoice. Connect Asana or ClickUp, pick which milestones bill, and Ledgerly drafts the invoice for you to approve. CTA: Start a 14-day trial”
